Final Project Process

So my final project changed a few different times from the proposal, as I was thinking it through. I decided to go with all metal, to eliminate the issue of attaching the wood to the frame of the bench. I also decided and made my letters XBE from the school's 3D printer. I worked very well, even though the first print failed. First I cut out all of my pieces of metal, then I removed the paint off of all the scrap 1x1. I came in the next day and put my side pieces together and ground down all of the welds. The next day (today) I came in and put the frame together. I then planed out a few pieces of scrap wood to 5/8ths of an inch which is the distance needed for equal spacing between the 1x1 when I used 7 pieces. Using the wood and clamps I welded on each piece of 1x1, one at a time, going in from the outside (see pics). I ground down all of the welds on the seat part of the bench but not the bottom. I finally put in the bottom support beam and ground those welds flush. The only welds not ground were on the underside. Also I put on end caps! The part I struggled with the most was setting up each of the welds. This took time because when set up incorrectly you get ugly welds and could have issues with stability. Overall it came out awesome!I am really pleased and excited to get it powder coated after the break.
