Project Proposal Chris Nkinthorn

I totally didn't know that we were also supposed to publish here.

Description

I would like to make a small coffee table that will replace one in my family’s living room. Based on materials that I have at home, I would it to be 2’x’4’x 1 1/2’. I would also want the table top attached to the steel frame only by a small rabbet that runs along the edge of the top.

Materials List

    1” Square Steel Tubing
    1” A/B Domestic Birch Plywood
    Walnut Veneer
    Contact Cement
    Metal Patina

Construction Method

The first thing to be constructed is the frame. From there, lumber and other plywood should be cut to fit. As steel is more expensive to come across and I should be sharing a sheet of 2’x4’ with someone else, it would give me some more leeway to mistakes in what will be my first real welding project. Attached is a small sketch of what the frame should look like. I do not like the aesthetics of a simple rectangular prism and am interested to see how it would look to seem to one side of the project seemingly floating in midair. he appropriate lengths, I would cut and weld the “top” and “bottom” U’s to match before moving on to the uprights. Next, I will grind the welds flush and apply a coat of blackening patina to give a darker look, inline with the darker walnut veneer.
On that note, I would cut the plywood to the exterior dimensions of the top U and then run a 1” wide, 1/2” deep rabbet the A side along two of the long edges and one of the short edges to lap over the frame. To hide the rabbets, I will mask the surface and paint the surface of the rabbets black. Then, I will then veneer the exposed edges and trim with a flush trim router before repeating with the B side of the plywood. A coat of stain will go over the surface of the top before being wiped off. This will be repeated if necessary and then coated with a a few coats of polyurethane. The top will then be slid into the frame. No fasteners will be used to attach the frame to the table top as eventually I will want to replace the top with a hardwood surface.
