For my final project, I want to build a coffee table that is approximately 48"x24"18-20". I am not entirely certain what size coffee table I want to build, but the plan is to figure it out before I buy the supplies. The coffee table will be made of 4"x4" posts as the legs, the top surface will be made of plywood or another sheet of wood that gives a nice look and provides a sturdy surface. The surface will be supported by 1x4 that are cut to fit in between the legs to make an apron. The 4"x4" posts are relatively cheap at home depot, and are quoted to cost about $7 for 10 feet, which will be more than enough material. 10 feet of 1x4 is also pretty cheap and costs anywhere from $5-10. Lastly, the top surface of the coffee table will be the most expensive material to buy. A 4'x8' sheet of plywood costs anywhere from $15-35 depending on the quality of the plywood. I will use screws to fasten everything together, which cost about $10 a box.
4x4 post (legs): $7-10
1x4 wood (apron): $5-10
4'x8' plywood (surface): $15-35
screws: $10
Total: $50-60
The table is a good project. The 4x4 price is probably for pressure treated lumber...not really good for furniture. Visually, a 3/4" piece of ply on top of 4x4 posts would look too thin. The picture you posted shows a much thicker top. You could use all 1x as an option.
